Microsoft has built a tool called Insight that will sniff out Skype Instant Messages and attachments. Several security researchers have confirmed it’s legitimate and doesn’t just rely on skimming Facebook and Skype contacts.
Microsoft claimed on its blog last week that Insight was part of the MSR Messaging service and is for “good” conversation and has been in the works for “a few years.” As the Washington Post reports, the tool was previously known as Titan but now has a new name.
When Skype users log in to a chat or message window, the window itself shows up on the list of running programs. If users chat about banking information or passwords in front of a “friend,” he or she may receive a notification that the chat window is visible. It’s also not clear why Microsoft waited to make the tool public.
Still, people who use Skype could use Insight to identify their chats. Microsoft said that anyone using Skype who agrees not to distribute that information will be able to enjoy the tool.
