People with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) experience difficulty in implementing strategies and managing disease-related complications. Low self-efficacy (SE) and self-doubt (SD) are associated with treatment failure. This study aimed to explore the influence of SE and SD on adherence behavior in T2DM patients. A cross-sectional study with a convenience sample of 38 adult patients with T2DM was conducted at a tertiary care hospital in the city of São Paulo, Brazil. Interviews were conducted with patients, using a SE and SD scale, to evaluate the presence of these psychological dimensions. Adherence to medication was evaluated by the Morisky scale. Data were analyzed by means of descriptive statistics and Spearman’s correlation analysis. The study found significant associations between the scales in SE, SD, and adherence to treatment (r = 0.59; p < 0.01). Also, significant associations were found between SE and patients' knowledge about the disease (r = 0.43; p < 0.05), and between SD and patients' knowledge about the disease (r = 0.47; p < 0.01). In this study, the association of self-efficacy and self-doubt was found to be significant. Considering the different results found in the literature on SE and SD, it is important to encourage these people to use strategies to adapt their behavior to control the disease, in addition to receiving support from healthcare professionals.
