AutoCAD is a commercial CAD application for drawing 2D and 3D geometric shapes and for creating technical drawings. Many designers use AutoCAD to design in the field. In AutoCAD, an outline or sketch is made on a page. Then, more detail is added and a drawing is created. The process is similar to creating a sketch on paper, but it is usually done electronically on a computer. AutoCAD uses a 2-dimensional (2D) coordinate system where the x-axis is the horizontal and the y-axis is the vertical. To create a 3D drawing, the software supports 2-dimensional (2D) and 3-dimensional (3D) coordinate systems. 3D drawings are used when a design must be made in 3 dimensions.

AutoCAD is designed to work on a wide variety of platforms. For example, it is available for Windows, OS X, iOS, macOS, Linux, macOS, Pocket PC, Unix, Android, Xbox, PlayStation and Nintendo 3DS. It supports four different languages: English, French, German, and Spanish.

AutoCAD allows the user to build a drawing from several components. These components are called objects. Objects can be layers of a drawing, shapes, objects, or annotations, such as title blocks. An object can be stacked, meaning that it will take up more space in a drawing. There are many types of layers, including (non-alphabetical) Table of Contents, Drawing, Project, Title, etc.

AutoCAD can be used to design and create many different types of drawings, including architectural, mechanical, civil, electrical, and architectural design drawings.

AutoCAD is compatible with other AutoCAD products, or other AutoCAD extensions that communicate with it. For example, it communicates with other programs through its native dialogs and with other AutoCAD versions via the internet. AutoCAD can also send and receive files to and from other applications.

AutoCAD originally started as Autocad: The Drafting System, the first version of which was launched on April 22, 1982. It was designed for drafting and architectural design and initially only ran on IBM PC computers with 8-bit word lengths and no color support. It was written in C and ran in its own window on top of MS-DOS, the operating system at the time. The early name for AutoCAD, ADAM, was chosen before Autocad when the developers talked about it in the movie Lucas, the first person to use this acronym.

Autocad’s name was changed to Autodesk AutoCAD in 1997, when the company was acquired by Autodesk. The name was changed back to AutoCAD in 2000. The first Autocad Professional, released in 2000, included the year 2000 as the product name, but the product was launched in 1999 and the year 2000 did not appear until later in the product’s software updates.

The popularity of AutoCAD on the Macintosh platform gave rise to a product named AutoCAD LT, released in April 1994. Unlike the original AutoCAD program, AutoCAD LT supported more than one working area (using multiple screens) and it allowed importing and exporting drawing files.

On July 14, 2009, Autodesk released AutoCAD 2010. AutoCAD 2010 is a platform agnostic drawing software and is the first AutoCAD version to support 64-bit operating systems. It is designed to address a number of limitations of the previous release, including support for multiple working areas and the ability to import and export DXF files.

In late October 2012, Autodesk launched AutoCAD Mechanical, a product that allows drafting of mechanical design. The new product was designed to address the need for mechanical drafters, which Autodesk estimates constitute up to 20% of the market.

AutoCAD LT 2011, the first major product update to AutoCAD LT, was released on November 23, 2009. It was available for both Windows and Macintosh OS X. The release also includes new features, such as improved support for Windows Vista and Windows 7, as well as support for the Mac OS X operating system version 10.5
