History

Champa was inhabited since pre-historical times and emerged as a major power in Southeast Asia, especially during the reign of Trần Dynasty. The Cham capital of Đại Việt was founded by Trần Nhân Tông in 1670 at Thăng Long (literally: “Sea castle”). The last Trần king, Lê Thánh Tông, was forced to take refuge in Phan Rang from his weak-willed son. Cham ruled southern Vietnam from Quảng Bình in modern Bình Tuy Province until 1673. With the fall of the Trần dynasty, the surviving population relocated to southern Vietnam.

During the mid-19th century, the Cham resisted occupying French forces in the Vietnamese war of Independence and formed a state of their own, called the “Kingdom of Champa”. The French considered it so strongly that they called it their own protectorate. They tried to conquer the Cham Kingdom by the same war of liberation methods they used in Vietnam, and pushed the Cham into a couple of encirclement campaigns which failed. The Cham also had some success against the French at the Battle of Cần Thơ, where the Cham king Trần Nhân Tông successfully resisted French troops for two days before he was eventually defeated.
